Hydrocarbon exploration routinely utilizcs stratigraphy for dating and predicting the depositional environments and lithology. Published global stratigraphy contains a hierarchy of sedimentation cycles, from first through fourth order, of 100000000, 10000000, 1000000,100000/10000 year periodicitics, respectively. Seismic stratigraphy may be used to develop a local sequence stratigraphy based principally on the determination of sealevcl position/ oscillations,which when compared to a global stratigraphy provides absolute dates.Third and fourth order stratigraphic cycles were identified in basins in Central- East Greenland and the Louisiana offthore. Synthetic dip seismic sections, derived from lithologic models, and based on regional geology and appropriate global stratigraphy, were used to support the interpretation.In this seismic interpretation, we identified and described each reflection and defined its origin as the result of eithcr global or local processes. An originating mechanism was assigned to cach reflection.
